The college provides it students with a liberal arts curriculum, as well as technical training, to prepare them for a four-year college or the work force.
Originally established as Loop College in fall 1962, it was renamed Harold Washington College in 1988 to honor Chicago’s first African-American mayor, Harold Washington, who was a City Colleges of Chicago alumnus and a strong advocate of the importance of community.
Harold Washington does not offer intercollegiate athletics, but its students have the opportunity to join numerous clubs, groups, and organizations, focusing on everything from psychology to chemistry to creative writing. The college has an active and diverse arts community, supporting theater performances, art exhibitions, music concerts and writing opportunities for students.
