CHICAGO – Three City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) basketball players were named Region IV Player of the Week on February 3.
Richard J. Daley College’s Amiri Young (Hammond H.S./Hammond, Ind.) was chosen as the men’s Division I Player of the Week, while Jessica Congress (Morgan Park H.S.) of Malcolm X College was the women’s Division I recipient. LaValle Nelson (Clemente Community Academy) of Wilbur Wright College claimed the men’s Division II District 3 award.
Young, who was also selected as the Region IV Player of the Week on January 21, averaged 25.0 points, 6.0 assists, 3.5 steals and 3.0 rebounds in Daley’s two games last week.
A freshman guard, Young tallied game highs of 25 points and five assists to go along with three rebounds and two steals against Olive-Harvey College on January 30. In a CCC victory over Harry S Truman College on February 1, Young led all players with 25 points, seven assists and five steals while also registering three rebounds.
Young is ranked fourth in the country among NJCAA Division I players with 88 steals and 22nd with a 21.6 points-per-game average. In addition to steals and points, he leads Daley in assists (5.5 per game).
Young is seeking an Associate in Science degree at Daley.
Congress averaged 24.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.0 assist to help Malcolm X finish 2-0 for the week and improve to 11-8 for the season, including 4-0 in the CCC standings.
Congress scored 34 points – the most by a Malcolm X player this season – and had a personal-best 10 rebounds to author her first collegiate double-double in the Hawks’ CCC win against Kennedy-King College on January 30. She also had two assists and one steal in the victory.
The freshman guard followed that performance with 14 points, four rebounds and two steals in the Hawks’ triumph at Sauk Valley Community College on February 1.
For the season, Congress is averaging 11.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 1.4 assists per outing.
Congress is pursuing an Associate in General Studies degree at Malcolm X.
Nelson averaged 26.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in each of Wright’s two games.
The freshman guard matched the highest point total by a Wright player this season when he scored 39 markers against Joliet Junior College on January 29. He also had four rebounds and four assists in the contest. Nelson published 13 points, four rebounds and two assists in a victory against the College of DuPage on February 1.
Nelson is averaging 14.4 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game for the season.
Nelson is in the process of earning an Associate in Arts degree at Wright.
In all, CCC has had 12 Region IV Player of the Week selections in the 2019-20 basketball season.
