SENATOBIA, Miss. – Faced with what will arguably be its toughest test of the year, the Olive-Harvey baseball team traveled to Northwest Mississippi Community College for a pair of doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday.
Northwest Mississippi, ranked No. 9 in the NJCAA Division II national poll, recorded a four-game series sweep, winning 10-0 and 12-2 on Friday and 12-0 and 15-4 on Saturday.
OHC produced three hits in Game 1 on Friday as Josh Coe (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.), Gabriel Cordoba (Merida, Puerto Rico) and Ramon Morales (Caguas, Puerto Rico) all singled.
In Friday’s finale, the Panthers tallied both of their runs in the first inning. With one out, Gabe Adams (Countryside H.S./Clearwater, Fla.) singled before scoring on Ellis Machin’s (Caguas, Puerto Rico) triple. Machin crossed home plate on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.
The lead didn’t last long as the hosts answered with four runs in their half of the first.
Along with his triple, Machin singled and coaxed a walk in his 2-for-2 performance. Other highlights included Cordoba’s double and Nael Rojas’ (Dorado, Puerto Rico) single.
After being held hitless in Saturday’s opener, Olive-Harvey recorded four runs in the third inning of the nightcap to cut into a 9-0 deficit. With two outs, Coe was issued a bases-loaded walk to plate the first run, and Semaj Patterson (Harlan H.S.) followed with an RBI single. Myles Henry (Crete-Monee H.S.) then delivered a two-run single to right field.
Prior to his walk, Coe singled in the second inning.
Olive-Harvey, 1-4 on the season, will host Kishwaukee in a doubleheader Thursday at 3 p.m.
