Despite a later than normal start to the season, Kennedy-King picked up their first win of the season with an 81-64 victory on the road at Truman College.
The Statesmen’s dynamic guard duo of Mario Lawrence and Joey Hudson combined for 44 of the team’s 80 points. The 5’8” Lawrence also led Kennedy-King with 9 rebounds while Grant Hall led all scorers with 26.
The Statesmen's first game was just over a week ago they've now played six games since with just five players. With no reserves currently on the active roster, it’s a lonely bench for Head Coach Thomas Trotter. He got a front row seat to see his team persevere to their first win of the season against the Falcons. “These guys stepped up and we’ve played some tough teams too… it’s great to get the win and I’m just happy to have a chance to coach again and have some fun.”
If there is a silver lining to be found, it’s the fact that the Statesmen’s small group has given them a chemistry on the floor that others with larger rosters may take longer to discover. “Everybody knows their roles and we know what we can do on offense,” Hall said. “We know each other pretty well and we feel that chemistry.”
In the losing effort, Truman was led by Jordan Fenderson who scored 23 points while Coby San Juan added 15 and Kiwane Scott chipped in 12.
