The Malcolm X men’s basketball team picked up its first win of the season after defeating Wright on Thursday in CCC play. Daley and Truman suffered losses to Ancilla College (Ind.) and Moraine Valley Community College, respectively.
Malcolm X 80, Wright 71
CHICAGO – An 8-0 run to close out the first half propelled the visiting Malcolm X men’s basketball team to an 80-71 CCC victory over Wright on Thursday.
The win marked MXC’s (1-2) first of the season. The Rams slipped to 0-2.
Nursing a 32-30 lead, the Hawks scored the final eight points of the opening period to build a 40-30 cushion at the break. They would remain in front the entire second half, upping their advantage to as many as 18 points.
Wright took control early on, surging ahead 20-11 with 11:34 remaining in the first stanza, but Malcolm X went on an 11-2 spurt over the next 2:41 to deadlock the game at 22-22. Five lead changes and two ties would follow before the guests staged their rally to close out the half.
Mystikal Suggs (Urbana H.S.) and Oliver McCall (Thornridge H.S.) accounted for the bulk of Malcolm X’s offensive production, scoring 27 and 23 points, respectively. McCall also had 15 rebounds.
Jamaal Gill (Hyde Park Academy) distributed 10 assists, and Kejuan Skanes (Hubbard H.S.) led the defense with three steals.
Four of Wright’s starters reached double figures in scoring, including Demarco Graham (Curie Metropolitan H.S.), who had 23 points along with six assists. Bobby Frierson (Al Raby H.S.) netted 13 points, and Kente Rushing Jr. (Vincent H.S./Milwaukee, Wis.) and Jamel White (Groppi H.S./Milwaukee, Wis.) both chipped in 12. Rushing collected 15 rebounds as well.
Ancilla (Ind.) 71, Daley 68
CHICAGO – For the second consecutive game, the Daley men’s basketball team was on the short end of a close decision.
Following a two-point loss Tuesday, the Bulldogs were edged 71-68 by visiting Ancilla College on Thursday.
With the game deadlocked at 67-67, the Chargers outscored Daley 4-1 in the final 1:10.
Clavone Hillard (North Lawndale Community Prep) and Shamond Garrett (Robeson H.S.) both published double-doubles. Hillard led all players with 19 points and 19 rebounds, while Garrett’s totals included 15 points and 11 boards.
Jalen Frizell (Whitney Young H.S.) scored 14 points and Nathan Towsen Jr. (Bogan H.S.) contributed 10 points and four assists.
Moraine Valley 95, Truman 78
PALOS HILLS, Ill. – After opening the season with back-to-back wins, the Truman men’s basketball team was defeated 95-78 by Moraine Valley Community College on Thursday at MVCC.
The hosts grabbed a 51-36 halftime lead and outscored the Falcons 44-42 in the final 20 minutes.
Justin Parker (Epic Academy) led Truman with 17 points and tied for game-high honors with nine rebounds. Dusaan Allen (Schurz H.S.) tallied 15 points, Terell Ousley Jr. (Crane H.S.) netted 13 and Keishun Thomas (St. Patrick H.S.) finished with 10.
