CCC Men’s Basketball Recaps – 11/13/18

In four games involving five CCC men’s basketball teams Tuesday, Wright and Olive-Harvey picked up wins after defeating Truman and College of DuPage, respectively.  Daley lost a close decision to College of Lake County, and Malcolm X fell to Highland Community College.

Wright 83, Truman 63
CHICAGO – A strong second-half effort enabled the Wright men’s basketball team to turn a two-point halftime deficit into an 83-63 CCC victory over Truman on Tuesday at the Dave Rowlands Sports Center.
 
The hosts led 37-35 at the intermission, but the Rams owned a 48-26 scoring advantage in the final 20 minutes to claim their first win of the season.
 
Wright (1-3, 1-1 CCC) scored the first seven points of the game and was in front 13-5 when the Falcons answered with a 17-2 run to go ahead 22-15 with 11:56 to play in the first half.  Truman would retain the lead the remainder of the period.
 
The Rams opened the second stanza on a 12-2 spurt to grab a 47-39 lead at the 16:23 mark.  Truman (2-2, 0-1 CCC) got the difference down to 60-55 midway through the half, but Wright recorded 11 of the next 13 points to increase its surplus to 71-57 with 6:10 remaining.  The margin would get no closer than 13 points the rest of the way.
 
Wright’s Jason Newman (Orr H.S.) topped the game charts with 20 points in his season debut.  Jamel White (Groppi H.S./Milwaukee, Wis.) and Kente Rushing Jr. (Vincent H.S./Milwaukee, Wis.) both posted double-doubles as the former had 18 points and 11 rebounds, while the latter produced 10 points and a game-best 13 boards.
 
Demarco Graham (Curie Metropolitan H.S.) and D’Andre Payne (Providence-St. Mel H.S.) scored 14 and 13 points, respectively.  Graham also had six assists and led all players with five steals.
 
Keishun Thomas (St. Patrick H.S.) scored 15 points and added a game-high seven assists in the setback.  Keshaun Surney (Mather H.S.) followed with 11 points and Dusaan Allen (Schurz H.S.) netted 10 markers for the Falcons.


Olive-Harvey 85, DuPage 71
GLEN ELLYN, Ill. – When Joell Davis (Kenwood Academy) connected on a jump shot with 16:28 to play to give the Olive-Harvey men’s basketball team a 43-42 advantage, it marked the 10th and final lead change in the Panthers’ 85-71 win over College of DuPage on Tuesday.
 
Davis’ field goal was part of a 10-1 OHC rally that saw the guests build a 51-43 cushion.  Olive-Harvey upped the difference to as many as 15 points before winning by 14.
 
There were eight lead changes as well as eight ties in the first half, which ended with OHC in front 35-33.
 
Ronnie Allgood (Proviso West H.S.) topped Olive-Harvey with 17 points.  Davis scored 14 points, and Jaelon Hood (Proviso East H.S.), Kendrick Robinson (Harper H.S.) and Xavier Hicks (Little Village H.S.) each chipped in 11.
 
Hood also had a game-high eight assists.


Lake County 73, Daley 69
GRAYSLAKE, Ill. – Of the six games the Daley men’s basketball team has played this season, five have been decided by five points or less, including Tuesday’s 73-69 loss at College of Lake County.
 
Nathan Towsen Jr. (Bogan H.S.) supplied a game-high 25 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to author his first collegiate double-double in the loss.  Clavone Hillard (North Lawndale Community Prep) registered his third consecutive double-double after scoring 17 points and leading all players with 13 boards.
 
Jalen Frizell (Whitney Young H.S.) reached double figures in scoring as well, finishing with 12 points.
 
Daley (1-5) led 38-33 at the break but was outscored 40-31 in the final 20 minutes.
 

Highland 76, Malcolm X 54
CHICAGO Mystikal Suggs (Urbana H.S.) scored 16 points and led all players with seven assists in the Malcolm X men’s basketball team’s 76-54 loss to Highland Community College on Tuesday at MXC,
 
Okeitho Marshall (Leo H.S.) had a team-best 10 rebounds.
 
Malcolm X jumped ahead 10-3 before Highland went on an 18-9 scoring spree to move in front 21-19 with 7:55 left in the first half.  The Cougars would hold on to the lead the remainder of the game.
