CCC Men’s Basketball Recaps – 12/8/18

The Olive-Harvey and Wright men’s basketball teams were victorious Saturday, while Morton, Daley and Truman suffered losses.
 
Olive-Harvey 86, Harper 69
PALATINE, Ill. – The Olive-Harvey men’s basketball team led from start to finish in an 86-69 victory against host Harper College on Saturday.
 
OHC (8-4) scored the first six points of the game, pulled away 37-29 at the half and was in front by as many as 18 points in the triumph.  The Panther defense forced Harper into 28 turnovers and parlayed them into 33 points.
 
Kendrick Robinson (Harper H.S.) tallied a game-best 24 points in the win.  Brandon Martin (Olive Branch H.S./Olive Branch, Miss.) authored his first collegiate double-double after recording a career-high 23 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, which tied him for game-high honors.  Martin, a sophomore forward, also had a personal-best five steals to lead all players.
 
Willie Greenwood (Proviso East H.S.) had 13 points and nine rebounds, and Samuel Moore (Thornwood H.S.) chipped in 10 points.
 

Wright 70, Kishwaukee 68
MALTA, Ill. – Withstanding two last-second three-point-shot attempts, the Wright men’s basketball team held on to defeat Kishwaukee College 70-68 on the road Saturday.  
 
Wright (6-8) trailed 29-24 before closing out the first half on an 11-0 run to take a 35-29 advantage at the break.  The Rams scored the first three points of the second period to extend the spurt to 14-0 and up their surplus to 38-29.
 
Wright pulled away by 12 points on three occasions (43-31, 47-25, 49-37) in the second half, but the Kougars rallied and jumped in front 56-55 with 8:29 remaining in the game.  The Rams, however, responded with eight unanswered points to go ahead for good, 63-56, at the 4:51 mark.
 
Wright’s lead did not get beyond four points in the final 3:58 of the game, which gave Kishwaukee an opportunity to win the game in the final seconds.  But the Kougars misfired on two 3-point baskets as time expired.  
 
Demarco Graham (Curie Metropolitan H.S.) led all players with 19 points and seven steals while also contributing a team-best seven assists.
 
Kente Rushing (Vincent H.S./Milwaukee, Wis.) and Jason Newman (Orr H.S.) both scored 14 points and Emanuel Oneal (Orr H.S.) added 11.  Jamel White (Groppi H.S./Milwaukee, Wis.) paced the Rams with 10 rebounds.
 

Morton 73, Malcolm X 71
CHICAGO Mystikal Suggs (Urbana H.S.) led the Malcolm X men’s basketball team with 20 points in the Hawks’ 73-71 loss to Morton College on Saturday at MXC.
 
Oliver McCall (Thornridge H.S.) netted 15 points, Jarquis Medley (Hubbard H.S.) scored 11 and Okeitho Marshall (Leo H.S.) contributed 10 markers in the setback.
 
McCall also had a game-high nine rebounds, and Jamaal Gill (Hyde Park Academy) led all players with eight assists.
 
Malcolm X owned a 42-40 halftime lead, but the Panthers held a 33-29 scoring advantage in the final 20 minutes to come away with the two-point win.
 

Parkland 80, Daley 72
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Seven of the Daley men’s basketball team’s nine games this season have been decided by eight points or less, including Saturday’s 80-72 defeat at Parkland College.
 
The Bulldogs were edged 34-31 and 46-41 in the first and second half, respectively, to fall by eight points.
 
Clavone Hillard (North Lawndale Community Prep) registered his team-best seventh double-double of the season as had 18 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
 
Nathan Towsen Jr. (Bogan H.S.) poured in 17 points and led all players with five steals.  Shamond Garrett (Robeson H.S.) scored 13 points and Jalen Frizell (Whitney Young H.S.) added 11.
 

Elgin 83, Truman 69
ELGIN, Ill. Keshaun Surney (Mather H.S.) tied his career high of 17 points in the Truman men’s basketball team’s 83-69 loss to  Elgin Community College on Saturday at ECC.
 
Dusaan Allen (Schurz H.S.) compiled 16 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.  Keishun Thomas (St. Patrick H.S.) finished with 10 points.
 
Truman trailed 12-2 less than three minutes into the game and saw the gap swell to 30-10 with 11:21 to play in the first half, but the Falcons narrowed the difference to 46-38 47 seconds into the second period and shrunk the margin to 48-41 at the 18:43 mark.  Elgin, however, put the game out of reach when it used a 14-0 run to turn its 52-44 cushion into a 66-44 lead.
