The Truman men’s basketball team picked up a CCC win against Malcolm X on Saturday, while Wright and Olive-Harvey defeated Harper College and Illinois Valley Community College, respectively. Kennedy-King suffered a loss to Highland Community College.
Truman 86, Malcolm X 80
CHICAGO – Joseph Cadney’s (Phillips H.S.) game- and career-high 28 points helped carry the Truman men’s basketball team to an 86-80 CCC victory over Malcolm X on Saturday at MXC.
Cadney drained 10-of-15 field goals, including 4-of-5 from three-point range, and 4-of-5 free throws in the triumph.
Dusaan Allen (Schurz H.S.) followed with 20 points, while Keishun Thomas (St. Patrick H.S.) had the first double-double in his two-year stint at Truman as he had 14 points coupled with a personal-best 11 rebounds.
Malcolm X’s Jamaal Gill (Hyde Park Academy) and Oliver McCall (Thornridge H.S.) each published a double-double. Gill compiled 26 points and 12 assists, and McCall totaled 15 points and a season-high 16 rebounds.
Also scoring in double figures for the Hawks were Mystikal Suggs (Urbana H.S.) (13 points), Kejuan Skanes (Hubbard H.S.) (12 points) and Okeitho Marshall (Leo H.S.) (10 points).
Truman was down 41-38 at the half but outscored MXC 48-39 in the final 20 minutes to come away with the win and earn a season split (Malcolm X won the first meeting 89-78 on Jan. 22).
Wright 109, Harper 81
CHICAGO – Leading by just three points at the half, the Wright men’s basketball team started the second period on a 13-0 run to fuel it to a 109-81 North Central Community College Conference win Saturday against visiting Harper College.
After 10 lead changes and six ties, Wright, which produced its largest point total of the season in the victory, took a 47-44 advantage at the break. In the first 3:06 of the second half, the Rams upped their surplus to 60-44 and eventually saw it swell to 34 points before winning by 28.
Jason Newman (Orr H.S.) recorded his second collegiate double-double after scoring 25 points and pulling down a career-best 12 rebounds. D’Andre Payne (Providence-St. Mel H.S.), meanwhile, had his first double-double at Wright, producing 12 points and a personal-best 10 boards.
Antonio Newman (Marshall H.S.) topped the game charts with 32 points, and Emanuel Oneal (Orr H.S.) chipped in 16.
Olive-Harvey 104, Illinois Valley 97
CHICAGO – Samuel Moore (Thornwood H.S.) topped the Olive-Harvey men’s basketball team with 22 points in the Panthers’ 104-97 win against Illinois Valley Community College on Saturday at OHC.
Moore edged out Kendrick Robinson (Harper H.S.), who finished with 21 points, for team-high scoring honors. Along with his point production, Robinson led all players with 16 rebounds. Willie Greenwood (Proviso East H.S.) also had a double-double, amassing 10 points and 10 rebounds as well as a game-high four steals.
Xavier Hicks (Little Village H.S.) and Jaelon Hood (Proviso East H.S.) contributed 13 and 10 points, respectively, in Olive-Harvey’s largest scoring total of the year.
The Panthers fell behind 45-41 at the half but outscored the guests 63-52 in the second stanza.
Highland 99, Kennedy-King 53
FREEPORT, Ill. – Terrell Stiger (King H.S.) scored 11 points and Javon Stovall (McKinley H.S./Canton, Ohio) added 10 in the Kennedy-King men’s basketball team’s 99-53 loss to host Highland Community College on Saturday.
In addition to his point production, Stovall handed out a game-high six assists to match his season best.
