All six CCC men’s basketball teams competed Tuesday night, including Wright, which defeated Kennedy-King in a head-to-head match-up. Malcolm X and Olive-Harvey picked up victories over Harper College and Morton College, respectively, while Daley and Truman were dealt setbacks.
Wright 80, Kennedy-King 73
CHICAGO – Trailing by 10 points with less than 10 minutes to play, the Wright men’s basketball team rallied to defeat Kennedy-King 80-73 in a CCC showdown Tuesday at the Willie Little Gymnasium.
KKC, which led 37-34 at the half, pulled away 59-49 – the largest lead of the game for either team – with 9:43 remaining when Wright answered with four unanswered points to cut the deficit down to 59-53. With Kennedy-King in front 63-56 at the 7:28 mark, the Rams went on a 13-1 run in a span of 4:30 to jump ahead 69-64, giving the guests their first advantage since 32-31 late in the opening period. Wright would stay on top the final 2:58 of the game.
The Statesmen closed the gap to 72-70 with 1:22 on the clock before the Rams tallied the next four points to seal the win. The seven-point margin at the conclusion of the game was Wright’s biggest of the night.
Wright’s Jamel White (Groppi H.S./Milwaukee, Wis.) scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to post his fifth double-double of the year. Demarco Graham (Curie Metropolitan H.S.) finished with 16 points and a game- and personal-best nine assists.
Jason Newman (Orr H.S.) had a 15-point performance, while Emanuel Oneal (Orr H.S.) netted 14 points and led all players with five steals.
Kennedy-King’s Sammie Davis (Tilden H.S.) authored his sixth double-double of the campaign after his 19-point, game-high 17-rebound effort that also included seven assists. Davis’ rebound and assists totals were both personal bests.
Devonte Logan (Phillips H.S.) reached double figures in scoring for the first time this season as he registered 16 points. Malik Onyeali (Hyde Park Academy) chipped in 11 points.
Malcolm X 77, Harper 61
CHICAGO – Oliver McCall (Thornridge H.S.) posted game-high totals of 23 points, 14 rebounds and six steals in the Malcolm X men’s basketball team’s 77-61 win against Harper College on Tuesday at MXC.
Okeitho Marshall (Leo H.S.) also had a double-double as he had 13 points along with 11 rebounds. Mystikal Suggs (Urbana H.S.) supplied 20 points.
Trailing 9-8, Malcolm X went ahead for good courtesy of a 12-0 run that gave the hosts a 20-9 advantage with 9:54 to play in the first half.
After taking a 39-21 lead at the break, MXC pulled away by as many as 23 points in the second half before capturing the 16-point win.
Olive-Harvey 97, Morton 86
CHICAGO – In the best offensive showing of his two-year career, Kendrick Robinson (Harper H.S.) erupted for a personal-best 41 points to help lift the Olive-Harvey men’s basketball team to a 97-86 victory over Morton College on Tuesday at OHC.
Robinson made 11-of-13 field goals, including 6-of-7 from three-point range, as well as 13-of-14 free throws.
Robinson’s contributions were not solely relegated to scoring as he also contributed six rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks.
Samuel Moore (Thornwood H.S.) and Brandon Martin (Olive Branch H.S./Olive Branch, Miss.) scored 13 and 11 points, respectively. Martin led all players with a career-high six assists and tied Robinson atop the game charts with three steals.
Olive-Harvey was down 44-38 at the half but outscored the Panthers 59-42 in the final 20 minutes.
Sauk Valley 113, Daley 98
CHICAGO – Despite shooting a season best 57.6 percent from the field, the Daley men’s basketball team lost 113-98 to visiting Sauk Valley Community College on Tuesday.
Clavone Hillard (North Lawndale Community Prep) scored a personal-best 30 points on 11-of-19 shooting. Shamond Garrett (Robeson H.S.) and Nathan Towsen Jr. (Bogan H.S.) both made 7-of-9 field goal attempts en route to scoring 20 and 18 points, respectively.
Everette Patton (Phillips H.S.), who connected on 5-of-8 field goals, contributed 12 points, while Levi Jackson (Irvington Prep/Indianapolis, Ind.) added 10 markers after draining 4-of-8 shots.
Along with their scoring, Hillard collected a game-high 13 rebounds and Towsen paced the Bulldogs with three steals.
Daley fell behind 51-42 at the half and was outscored 62-56 in the second period.
Triton 88, Truman 64
CHICAGO – Facing arguably the toughest opponent it will see all year, the Truman men’s basketball team lost 88-64 to nationally-ranked Triton College on Tuesday at the Dave Rowlands Sports Center.
Keishun Thomas (St. Patrick H.S.) topped Truman with 17 points. Dusaan Allen (Schurz H.S.) scored 10 points and had a team-best nine rebounds.
Triton, which led 41-32 at the half, has received votes in each of the first two NJCAA Division I national polls this season after winning the Division II championship in 2017-18.
