The Olive-Harvey men’s basketball team edged Kennedy-King in a CCC battle Thursday. Daley and Truman also picked up wins, while Malcolm X came up short.
Olive-Harvey 78, Kennedy-King 75
CHICAGO – Along with scoring a career-high 24 points, Joell Davis (Kenwood Academy) also registered the go-ahead basket in the Olive-Harvey men’s basketball team’s 78-75 CCC victory against Kennedy-King on Thursday at the Willie Little Gymnasium.
Davis’ layup with 44 seconds remaining put the Panthers in front 76-75. Samuel Moore (Thornwood H.S.) and Willie Greenwood (Proviso East H.S.), who scored 14 and 10 points, respectively, each connected on a free throw to extend the lead to 78-75. After Greenwood missed his second free throw with four seconds left on the clock, the Statesmen were unable to get off a game-tying shot.
Kennedy-King led 37-30 at the half, but the guests owned a 48-38 scoring surplus in the final 20 minutes. KKC led by as many as 10 points (30-26), whereas the Panthers’ biggest cushion was just four points (4-0).
Brandon Martin (Olive Branch H.S./Olive Branch, Miss.) had a double-double for the victors, finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Kennedy-King’s Javon Stovall (McKinley H.S./Canton, Ohio) totaled 18 points. Sammie Davis (Tilden H.S.) had 17 points and a game-best 13 rebounds, and Malik Onyeali (Hyde Park Academy) recorded 13 points in addition to leading all players with six assists.
Daley 103, Prairie State 82
CHICAGO – Three members of the Daley men’s basketball team eclipsed the 20-point plateau in the Bulldogs’ 103-82 win against visiting Prairie State College on Thursday.
Clavone Hillard (North Lawndale Community Prep) led the way with 29 points. Shamond Garrett (Robeson H.S.) followed with 24 points and Nathan Towsen Jr. (Bogan H.S.) added 20.
Garrett and Hillard both tallied a double-double as the former had 15 rebounds, while the latter collected 14 boards. Garrett’s 15 rebounds matched his all-time high.
Jalen Frizell (Whitney Young H.S.) supplied 14 points and six assists. Towsen had six assists as well.
The Bulldogs, who were in front 40-36 at the half, had their third-highest scoring total of the season. Their 56.9 percent accuracy rate from the field marked their second-best showing of the campaign.
Truman 73, Lincoln Land 66
CHICAGO – Keishun Thomas (St. Patrick H.S.) scored a game- and season-best 28 points to carry the Truman men’s basketball team to a 73-66 victory over Lincoln Land Community College on Thursday at the Dave Rowlands Sports Center.
Joining Thomas in double figures were Dusaan Allen (Schurz H.S.) (16 points) and Bryson Phillips (Jones College Prep) (11 points).
Thomas’ five assists and Allen’s eight rebounds were both game-high totals.
The Falcons used a 43-32 scoring advantage in the second stanza to erase a 34-30 halftime deficit.
Moraine Valley 81, Malcolm X 75
PALOS HILLS, Ill. – Strong performances by Oliver McCall (Thornridge H.S.), Jamaal Gill (Hyde Park Academy) and Okeitho Marshall (Leo H.S.) weren’t enough to lift the Malcolm X men’s basketball team to victory as the Hawks fell 81-75 to Moraine Valley Community College on Thursday at MVCC.
McCall led all players with 25 points, while Marshall had 18 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Gill scored 21 points and topped the game charts with nine assists.
