MBB: Malcolm X vs. East-West JV

The Malcolm X College Hawks rolled to a commanding 112-91 win over the East-West JV Phantoms on January 10, 2025, using a strong second-half surge to pull away after a closely contested first half.

Juaquin Dixon led the charge for the Hawks with a game-high 29 points. Dixon was nearly automatic from the free-throw line, going 13-of-14, and shot 8-of-13 from the field. His ability to consistently attack the basket and convert at the charity stripe kept Malcolm X in control throughout the game. Though he didn’t tally any assists, his leadership and scoring efficiency set the tone for the Hawks.

Collin Woods also played a pivotal role in the victory, contributing 22 points. Woods knocked down two three-pointers and filled the stat sheet with 3 rebounds and a steal, providing much-needed scoring and energy on both ends of the court.

The game was tightly contested in the first half, with Malcolm X taking a narrow 52-51 lead into the break. However, the Hawks came out firing in the second half, outscoring East-West 60-40 to put the game out of reach. Their strong defensive pressure forced 17 turnovers from the Phantoms, with Malcolm X capitalizing on those mistakes to fuel their offense.

Key bench contributions came from Dylan Burrowes and Willie Kennix. Burrowes scored 10 points on an efficient 5-of-6 shooting, while Kennix added 8 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 blocks, providing a strong interior presence that helped the Hawks dominate the paint.

Overall, Malcolm X shot a blistering 58.8% from the field, including 38.9% from beyond the arc. Their ability to convert at a high rate from both the floor and the free-throw line (78.1%) made them nearly unstoppable offensively. The Hawks' well-rounded attack, combined with tenacious defense that recorded 6 blocks and 10 steals, led them to an emphatic victory.
