MBB: Malcolm X vs. Highland

The Malcolm X College Hawks secured a nail-biting 102-100 overtime victory against the Highland Cougars in a high-scoring affair on January 8, 2025. In a game that saw both teams tied at 39 by halftime and 87 after regulation, the Hawks held their nerve in the extra period to pull out the win.

Juaquin Dixon was the star of the night for the Hawks, delivering a dominant performance with 33 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists. Dixon was efficient from the floor, shooting 11-of-18, while also going 10-of-12 from the free-throw line. His ability to score inside and draw fouls played a critical role in keeping the Hawks in the game and ultimately sealing the victory.

Collin Woods was another key contributor for Malcolm X, scoring 22 points on 8-of-19 shooting. Woods showcased his all-around game, adding 4 assists and 3 steals to help the Hawks both offensively and defensively.

The game was tightly contested throughout, with both teams trading baskets and neither side able to gain significant separation. Malcolm X's defense stepped up in the extra period, holding Highland to just 13 points while scoring 15 of their own to escape with the win.

Angel Edmonson added 10 points and 5 rebounds for the Hawks, while Kevin McGhee chipped in 10 points off the bench, hitting two three-pointers. The Hawks also displayed impressive accuracy from the free-throw line, going 32-of-39 (82.1%), which proved vital in such a close contest.

Despite Highland's balanced scoring attack, with several players contributing, including a stellar 48-point second half, Malcolm X's resilience and clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch were the difference-makers.
