DES PLAINES, Ill. – The Olive-Harvey baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Oakton Community College on Thursday, losing 6-4 and 6-1 on the road.
OHC (5-3) trailed 6-0 in the opener but rallied with four runs in the fifth inning. Anthony Martinez (Ridge Community H.S./Kissimmee, Fla.) got things started with a leadoff single through the left side. Raul Estades (Osceula H.S./Kissimmee, Fla.) followed with a walk, and Jorge Torres (North Shore H.S./Houston, Texas) singled to right-center to load the bases for Joseph Castillo (Bloom Trail H.S.), who walked to score Martinez. Ronald Applewhite (Rich East H.S.) singled to left to drive in a pair and cut the deficit to 6-3. With one out, William Wormsbecher (Pembroke Pines Charter/Pembroke Pines, Fla.) singled to left-center to re-load the bases, and Christian Perez (Colegio Bautista de Caguas H.S./Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico) was issued a two-out base-on-balls to plate the fourth run of the inning.
The Panthers had an opportunity to tack on additional runs in the seventh inning as Wormsbecher had a base hit to left and Julio Castro (Island Coast H.S./Cape Coral, Fla.) walked with one out. But Olive-Harvey was unable to convert, closing out the game with a pair of groundouts.
Applewhite and Wormsbecher topped the offense with two hits apiece.
Only two of the six runs Game 1 starter Kenneth O’Farrill (Vocacional Miguel Such H.S./Loiza, Puerto Rico) allowed in his four-inning stint were earned. Yaviel Colon (Stella Marquez H.S./Salina, Puerto Rico) blanked the hosts in the fifth and sixth innings.
Following the same script in the nightcap, OHC fell behind 6-0 before scoring in the fifth inning. Martinez once again led off with a single and moved up 90 feet on Gabriel Sanchez’s (Spring H.S./Houston, Texas) base hit to right. Jeremiah Williams (Thornton Fractional North H.S.) knocked in Martinez with a two-out single to center.
Williams finished 2-for-2 at the plate, while Sanchez was 2-for-3.
Relievers Rick Montenegro (Curie Metropolitan H.S.) and Arthur Wells (Julian H.S.) combined to allow one unearned run and five hits in 3.1 innings.
